Young America
CARDINALS
The Young America Cardinals are one of two original amateur baseball teams in the town of Norwood Young America . The other team , the Norwood Indians , had their team fall apart before the 2016 season and has not been able to field a team since .
Over the past three years , Young America has been one of the top teams in Class C . The Cardinals have made deep runs at the state tournament each of the past three seasons as they have a core of young talent to build around .
Young America has reached the state tournament eight times in team history . The first time they did so was back in 1946 .
In 2020 , Young America ’ s season came to an end in the Class C state semifinals . They fell to St . Patrick by a score of 6-4 . It marked the second time in three years Young America fell short of reaching the title game by just one game .
Young America won the 2020 Region 7C title after finishing the regular season with an overall record of 9-4 . The Cardinals swept the New Germany Dutchmen in a best-of-three-game series before winning the region title .
Dillon Whittaker was named the team ’ s Pitcher of the Year . He finished the season with an ERA of 5.94 in 16.2 innings of work . He posted a record of 2-1 while leading the team in strikeouts with 22 .
Alex Logelin was named the team ’ s Most Valuable Player . Logelin had a season to remember as he burst onto the scene . He was tied for the league lead in home runs with five , including two grand slams . He finished with an average of . 360 while also recording 15 RBI and three doubles .
The Cardinals play their home games at one of the most unique parks in the state . Willkommen Park in Young America features a one-of-a-kind atmosphere to take in a ball game . Fans can speak for their famous ‘ Billy Burgers ’ as a local favorite during the games .
