Many ow officers will have served on the
Defence Staff of British Missions overseas, as
indeed did the present Duke of Wellington
who was Defence Attaché in Madrid in the
1960s. They too have played an important
role in Britain’s overseas diplomacy.
Other currently serving ow diplomats include Tom Phillips, Ambassador to
Saudi Arabia, Robert Chatterton-Dickson,
Consul General in Chicago, and Chris InnesHopkins, Director of Trade and Investment
in Saudi Arabia.
Marianne Young’s appointment as British
High Commissioner to Namibia, the Apsley’s
first Ambassadorial posting, is thus part of a
long and distinguished ow tradition.
