Depression can sometimes come dressed in a silent white coat. No warning, no indication of its arrival. For some people, before they even realize it's an issue, it has already been present for some time.

Depression can show up in the form of anxiety, hyper-activity, sadness, and or frequent mood swings. Anxiety and depression manifests itself in diffferent ways. Some people begin overeating, while others pick up other habits such as, smoking and drinking.

Doctors have not yet been able to measure the severity levels of depression. This is the reason that scientists have created a self report scale called a "depression anxiety stress scale". The objective of the study is to equip scientists and researchers with better tools to treat this problem.

The scale is divided into three sets. FIRST: The depression scale which assesses the person's perception in life and interest in certain things. SECOND: The anxiety scale looks into situational anxiety, autonomic arousal, skeletal muscle effects and subjective experience of anxious effect. THIRD: The stress scale looks into how long before the person feels stressed.

Large companies who are concerned about their employees sometimes employ the help of social workers to administer the depression anxiety stress scale or DASS on people. These firms should remember that the results of these tests can only be translated by those in the medical field so that recommendations and treatment can take place. The DASS questionnaire can be downloaded for free from the internet.
