THE MAIN INFORMATION ABOUT KHERSON
City’s coat of arms
City’s flag
Kherson was founded in 1778 by Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin, on the orders
of Catherine the Great. The city was built under the supervision of General Ivan
Gannibal on the site of a small fortress called Aleksanderschanz. The name of the
city means “a bank” in Greek. But there is another opinion about the origin of this
name. Some scientists believe that it comes from the name of the fortress
“Khersones” in the Crimea. Kherson was fated to become the cradle of the Black
Sea Fleet. One of the first buildings in the Kherson Fort was the Church of St.
Catherine where Potemkin was eventually buried.
It is an administrative, industrial and cultural centre of Kherson Oblast (Region). It
is a sea port and the biggest river port on the Dnipro. The population of the city is
more than 340.000 people.
Kherson is an educational centre of Ukraine. There are many colleges,
professional and technical schools, institutes and universities here. Among them
we should mention National University, National Technical University, International
University of Business and Law, etc. These educational establishments train many
good specialists.
As it was said above, Kherson is a cultural centre with many places of interest.
Here there are two theatres, many monuments, devoted to historical events,
beautiful churches and cathedrals, cinemas and stadiums. The beautiful streets of
our town inspired famous writers and artists to create new masterpieces. Many
tourists come here in summer.
