Nowhere is “build it, and they will come” more apropos than the Cumberland
County Playhouse.
The community theater on Crossville’s Tennessee Ave. is the encore of
“The Perils of Pinocchio,” a 1963 production staged by Broadway producer
and director Paul Crabtree, while on sabbatical with his bride, the former
Mary Ducey, and their children in Mary’s hometown of Crossville.
The production left many in Crossville wanting more, so they turned to the
man behind it all.
“Well, first you’d have to build a theater,” he said.
That’s just what they did — and appreciative audiences have been coming
for more than 50 years to see shows that range from children’s dance
recitals to major productions of favorites that captivated theater-goers on
the Great White Way, including “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Phantom of the
Opera,” “Les Miserables,” “Cats” “Grease” and “West Side Story.”
Two generations of the Crabtree family guided the Playhouse. Paul and
Mary Crabtree steered it during the early years, with son Jim Crabtree later
taking the helm. Today, Bryce McDonald is producing director and CEO of
what’s been heralded as one of the 10 largest professional theaters in rural
America.
The Cumberland County Playhouse annually serves more than 145,000
visitors with two indoor stages, two outdoor stages, youth productions, a
dance program, concert series and touring shows. It showcases nearly 500
performances and 1,600 classes in theater, music, and dance each year.
