Multicultural Holidays and Celebrations HISTORY Spanish Version: Page 8 The third Monday in January (January 19) is Martin Luther King Day commemorating the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., the recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize and an activist for non-violent social change until his assassination in 1968. He worked to make America a more fair, tolerant, and equal nation. King believed in the ideals of the Declaration of Independence—that every citizen deserves America’s promise of equality and justice. January 26 is Republic Day of India. It represents the true spirit of the independent India and recognizes the date the Constitution of India came into law in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act of 1935. This date was chosen as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, which was held on January 26, 1930.The constitution gave India's citizens the power to govern themselves by choosing their own government. This day also coincides with India's 1930 declaration of independence. Provided by Maryland Diversity Center INFORMACION A TU ALCANCE Enero 2015 / Conexiones - 29
