Juliette The town of Juliette was named for Juliette McCracken, the daughter of the engineer who built the railroad near the town, which was originally known as Glover in the late 1800s. The first Juliette school was built around 1900, but the building unfortunately burned in 1907. The building was eventually rebuilt and still stands today. Joe Smith built a cotton mill and Juliette Milling Company Gristmill, the first major industry in Juliette. Around 1900, the two businesses were purchased by the Glover family and consolidated under one name, Juliette Milling Co. The first bridge built across the Ocmulgee River, which is located next to Juliette, was built in 1907. |
Though much of the industry has since left Juliette, the downtown area returned to prominence when the 1991 movie“ Fried Green Tomatoes” filmed in Juliette. The movie’ s chief landmark, the Whistle Stop Cafe, was recreated in Juliette by locals. The restaurant remains popular today.
High Falls In the early 1800s, High Falls was a prosperous industrial town with several stores, a gristmill, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a shoe factory, and even a hotel. However, when a major railroad bypassed in 1880s, the formerly bustling spot became a near ghost town. High Falls State Park remains near where the town used to be. Culloden Culloden, located in west Monroe County, is the oldest city in the county. It was first settled in the late 1700s by William Culloden, a Scotsman. Culloden has long been known for its farming, but in recent years, the town has rediscoved its Scottish roots. The town played host for about a decade to the Culloden Highland Games, a Scottish athletic competition. Culloden was also known for its annual blues music festival and for being the site of a Civil War battle in April 1865, when the home militia challenged two regiments of Federal mounted infantry shortly before the surrender of the Confederacy. |
