County expanding services
In 2012, Monroe County has a $ 20.8 million annual budget that is funded mainly by property taxes.
The biggest departments include the sheriff’ s office($ 3.3 million), the road department($ 2.6 million), EMS($ 2.4 million) and the water department($ 1.7 million).
Monroe County has a lot of projects under way with its one-cent sales tax.
In 2010 commissioners completed a $ 1 million + renovation to the historic Monroe County courthouse that has won rave reviews. Years of paneling and tattered carpet were removed revealing

In 2011 the county also built a new $ 140,000 animal shelter next to the sheriff’ s office.
Water lines have been extended on the north end of the county around Stokes Store Road and into the area around Bolingbroke, projects that total more than $ 1 million.
The county seat of Monroe County is Forsyth. Other communities in this county are Bolingbroke, Culloden, Juliette, High Falls and Smarr.
