Whether you enjoy watching a bald eagle swooping downward toward an unsuspecting fish, calling a wily turkey gobbler in a hardwood bottom beneath an umbrella of pale green leaves, slowly drifting down a river tossing beetle spins up against fallen trees along the shoreline or photographing a flock of sandhill cranes standing if a pasture on a crisp fall afternoon, Monroe County is THE place for you. Indeed, you would be hardpressed to find a place that offers more varied hunting, fishing, wildlife watching or photographic opportunities than Monroe County.
Monroe County sprawls across 397 square miles of land just north of the Fall Line in Middle Georgia. While Monroe County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country, it still retains much of its rural charm. Additionally, it is blessed with a variety of habitats that are home to an amazing array of wild plants and animals.
The majority of these wild places are on private lands. Fortunately, for those residents and visitors that don’ t own or lease wild lands to pursue their passion of wildlife, you can still enjoy wildlife without having to leave the county. There is excellent public access to the county’ s major rivers, streams and lakes. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy fishing, wildlife photography and wildlife watching at High Falls State Parks. The Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area offers a
broad spectrum of wildlife-related recreational opportunities.
Fishing has long been one of the county’ s most popular outdoor pursuits. Anglers can fish for more than a dozen species of game and panfish in the county’ s waters. Although bass fishing seems to get most of the press, crappie, bream, hybrid, striped
