Monroe County was spared much of the Civil War shattering violence, although a battle was fought in Culloden after the war had officially ended; word had not yet reached area troops that Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered on April 9, 1865. The Battle of Culloden took place 10 days after the surrender of the Confederacy. The Maynard brothers of Forsyth made whiskey for the Confederate government to use in military hospitals to relieve pain and suffering of soldiers. It was a good location, since Forsyth was home to five Confederate hospitals during the war. P. B. Zellner, grandson of W. T. Maynard, kept remains of the still at his Montpelier Road homeplace.

1968. This major north-south highway allows for easy access to the business centers of Atlanta and Macon while also bringing countless visitors to the county as they travel south to Florida.

Once abandoned, the historic Old City Hall in Forsyth was beautifully restored in 2008, becoming the Welcome Center.
