County expanding services

In 2010, Monroe County has a $ 20.8 million annual budget that is funded mainly by property taxes. That represents a 5 percent reduction in spending from 2009.

The biggest departments include the sheriff’ s office($ 3.2 million), the road department($ 2.5 million), EMS($ 2.2 million) and the water department($ 2.2 million).

Monroe County has a lot of projects under way with its one-cent sales tax.

The county hired Renfroe Construction and Fry Design Group to build a $ 4 million administrative building behind the current county administrative offices on Main Street

revealing the 1896 structure’ s original hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. The original spectator balcony in the main courtroom was renovated and re-opened.

The county is also building a new $ 140,000 animal shelter next to the sheriff’ s office. Water lines are being extended on the north end of the county around Stokes Store Road and into the area around Bolingbroke, projects that total more than $ 1 million.

The county has also purchased the Plant Camellia water treatment facility on the Ocmulgee River in Juliette with hopes of developing the county’ s own water supply. The county currently buys its water from other jurisdictions or gets it from wells.

The county seat of Monroe County is Forsyth. Other communities in this county are Bolingbroke, Culloden, Juliette, High Falls and Smarr.
