The first section of a new regional park in Floyd County opened in 2024 , and there is much more planned in the upcoming years .
In November , county officials named the new Robert “ Bob ” Lane Regional Park in Georgetown and opened the 75-acre Melvin and Vickie Jensen Nature Preserve and Trails .
Once completed , the regional park will include more than 200 acres .
Floyd County Parks Superintendent Matt Denison said it is “ time for something big in that part of the county .”
“ We ’ re so excited for the people of Georgetown with all the momentum in that community , and we ’ re excited to add this park ,” he said . “ This is a long-term project for us and for the county , and we ’ ve already seen some early interest in the Jensen trails that have opened there .”
He expects to see more people using the park this spring , and the goal is to offer organized hikes for the community to see and learn about the park , including the history and potential future of the property , Denison said .
Floyd County Commissioner Al Knable said the opening of the park ’ s first section was the “ culmination of years of background work ” from community leaders .
“ A family came to the county and said they want their property to remain in perpetuity as native land — or as close to it as we can — and used by the public rather than a larger development ,” he said .
