Preschoolers Learn Composting At The Weinstein JCC
At the Weinstein JCC Preschool, the Edible Garden provides children with a hands-on learning experience that extends beyond the classroom. Guided by Susan Quick, the preschool’ s outdoor educator, children develop essential skills while exploring the plant life cycle— from seeds to growth and renewal through composting.
Donor support for the Edible Garden nurtures not only plants but also young minds, fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature and sustainability.
The Edible Garden reflects the Jewish value known as” tikkun olam,” which refers to any activity that repairs the world and makes it a better place. Through composting, children witness the power of renewal as snack scraps transform into nutrientrich soil that nourishes future plants. Sustainability and conservation become second nature as they learn that even small acts of care contribute to a greater good.
Jewish traditions are deeply woven into the garden experience. Holidays are celebrated with harvests, such as digging potatoes from the garden beds for Hanukkah latkes and using freshly grown horseradish on Passover Seder plates.
