The unholy trinity 37 I hope you can see where this is leading. Having a big meal at the end of the day with three or four of these food groups before you go to bed to do a big fat nothing( unless of course you are about to get lucky!) is a problem. It is very likely that the bulk of the carbohydrate and fat in the meal is going to be laid straight down on your hips, thighs and belly. The King of Sabotage: conning ourselves on a daily basis Initially, I thought that not eating up big at the end of the day was important from this physiological point of view, but as I have worked with more and more people, I have come to see that it is the psychological impact of this pattern that is the real problem. What’ s happening here is rather intriguing. When we set ourselves up to be good in the morning by not eating very much, we can say to ourselves,‘ Haven’ t I been good today! I’ ve eaten so well. But I am rather hungry( read‘ starving’) – my sugar levels must be a little low and I deserve something nice’. We create the justification not just to eat, but to over-eat. In the last chapter we discussed the critical role that deprivation plays. Now add to deprivation the powerful instinctual drive of hunger and you can see what a deadly combination we have created. Then if that is not enough, we now add the crowning glory – justification‘ Haven ' t I been good? I deserve a little something!’ It’ s like an elaborate sting operation that we spend the whole day setting up, so we can con ourselves into believing that it is quite okay to over-eat in the evening. We put these three powerful players – deprivation, starvation and justification – in place to guarantee the success of the con. We use a lot of overkill. Of all forms of sabotage, this is the one that the majority of people rely upon on a daily basis. Sabotaging weight loss through the use of the unholy trinity is something that many of us use on a daily basis – the King of Sabotage. So how do we rectify the situation? Simple! We deal with each of the King’ s men that make up the unholy trinity.
