Using GL to sort the good, the bad and the suicidal 126 The Low Sacrifice Switching Game At the end of the day, after all the shouting is done, losing weight comes down to the food we choose to put in our mouth. While there may be all sorts of complicated unconscious processes at work, our hand still has to reach out and choose one food or another to put in our mouth. It is all about choice. Choice is entirely a psychological process. Whether or not we lose weight always comes back to the fundamental psychological process of choosing. I am not here to advocate a particular diet in terms of what you eat. I will teach you the principles of healthy eating and healthy food choice, but you, and only you, can determine what your version of this Low Sacrifice Diet looks like. What constitutes a high sacrifice food for me may well be one that you don’ t even like. If managing your individual, high sacrifice foods is not taken into account then history teaches us that your diet will fail around 90 % of the time – inevitably. For this fundamental reason I don’ t believe any expert can give you‘ the diet’. As we have discussed, carbohydrate is the most complex food group – the group with the greatest variety and number of choices within it. So what I want to do now is take you through an exercise in the psychology of food choice using carbohydrates by way of example. I want you to approach this like a game. The‘ game board’ is the GL Table that you will find at the back of this book. The game has three objectives: Objective 1: To experiment with as many foods from as high in the table as possible, within each food category. These are foods with the lowest GL. The objective is to find as many low GL foods that you like as possible. Objective 2: To eat larger portions of low GL foods and smaller portions of high GL foods. If you need to lose more weight, faster, particularly for medical reasons then portion management in this way is particularly important.
