The magnificent Baroque structure dates back only
from 1905, but stands on the site of several earlier
structures. Within the richly decorated interior
of the church lies the magnificent Sauer’s Organ,
the 1530 Elector’s tomb, the neo-baroque pulpit and
the stained glasses designed by Anton von Werner.
The main altar, which was a part salvaged from
the previous cathedral, dates back to 1850. The best
vantage point of the dome and entire interior is at
the end of a 270-step climb to the dome’s gallery.
Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at
noon, 12 guns sound a salute and the mayor
cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” Also, don’t be surprised to find yourself
sharing a toast, or Prost!, with a few fresh-faced
school kids. The legal drinking age for beer and
wine in Germany is 16 years old, and just 14 if
you’re accompanied by an adult.

Munich, set in the heart of Bavaria, is Germany’s third largest city. Visit during Oktoberfest and you’ll be in for a treat during this traditional Bavarian
beer drinking festival. Held annually, this is Germany’s most famous festival
attracting more than 5 million people. The city itself is centred around Marienplatz, the main square and the life and soul of the city.
Pulsing with prosperity and Gemütlichkeit (cosiness), Munich revels in its
own contradictions. Folklore and age-old traditions exist side by side with
sleek BMWs, designer boutiques and high-powered industry. Its museums
include world-class collections of artistic masterpieces, and its music and
cultural scenes give Berlin a run for its money.

the Bavarian monarch. Marvel at the renais
