10 X 10 Challenge Winner Rodger Nicholson's

Chris Becksvoort Inspired Lamp

Congratulations to Rodger Nicholson whose Chris Becksvoort inspired lamp won the 10 x 10 challenge. The challenge was collaborative effort with the Wood Talk Online Forum over at The Wood Whisperer website. Contestants were asked to build a project using no more than 10 BF of lumber and a maximum of 10 tools. There were some excellent entries and the voting was very close. You can read more about the challenge here. This is what Rodger had to say about his lamp:

“I decided to build a lamp, which was inspired by Chris Becksvoort. The lamp uses less than 2 BF of lumber, and consists of a solid walnut base and frame, and maple veneer rings (shade).

The base pieces are joined with half laps to form the "X" shape. The top was made in a similar fashion, with half laps to form the assembly. The stiles are joined to the base with through tenons, which were glued in and trimmed with a flush cut saw. The top assembly is connected to the stiles with bridle joints.

To form the shade, I cut maple veneer into 2 1/4" strips, and then formed the circles. Each ring was individually measured to ensure no "wonky" rings. The 9 rings were glued and left to dry. Then they were individually glued onto the frame.

The finish is 5 coats of sprayed shellac, which was rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and some paste wax.

Finally, I connected the electrical (cord, switch, etc).

Overall this was a fun project to build, though it was frustrating at times. "
