DESCRIPTION
This is an erect , emergent herb which grows up to about 1 metre tall . Larger stems can be quite robust .
Leaves grow in opposite pairs along the stem , are coarse in texture , have prominent veins and a distinct midrib .
Flowers are papery , white flower whorls borne in the axils of the leaves that turn brown upon maturity .
Habitat is a water plant but can grow along river banks .
Weed characteristics the aggressive growth of this plant poses a competitive threat to native water plants . It forms mats of dense , floating growth at the edges of freshwater lakes and rivers .
Dispersal stems sprout new roots from the nodes when in contact with soil .
BIOSECURITY MATTER
Restricted . This species is Category 3 Restricted matter under Queensland Legislation .
HOW TO ACT
New infestations must be reported to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 . The plant must be identified and removed by approved officers and have their locations recorded prior to removal . Mechanical or physical removal from waterways and foliar spraying with an appropriate herbicide are effective treatments .
