Cyperus aromaticus
DESCRIPTION
This perennial grows in thick grass-like clumps , usually 30 to 60 centimetres high , occasionally reaching 2 metres .
Stem is underground which produces shoots at regular intervals along its length and develops into a shallow root system .
Leaves are drooping , clustered at the base of the stem . Leaves are about 5 centimetres long and narrow . They are strongly aromatic when crushed .
Flower at the top of a triangular stalk . Under the white knob-like flower are 6 leaf-like bracts . Three are long and 3 are short .
Seeds are brown to black and eggshaped with a hook on one end .
Habitat it thrives in hot , wet , open situations , although it will also grow in drier soils . It is found in paddocks , among improved pastures , in drains and on roadsides .
Weed characteristics it forms dense stands and this plant can be a problem in sugarcane . It is unpalatable to stock .
Dispersal seeds can be spread in animal faeces and through mud on hooves , pelts , foot wear and machinery . It can also spread vegetatively .
BIOSECURITY MATTER
This species is not listed under Queensland Legislation however it may be listed under local government law and control is highly recommended .
HOW TO ACT
Hand removal is effective for small infestations . Foliar spraying with a sedge-specific herbicide may be effective if conducted at the right time . Mechanical control is not an effective control method .
