NEEM
Azadirachta indica
DESCRIPTION
This large perennial tree can reach 35 metres in height .
Leaves are compound , with 20-30 asymmetrical serrated leaves . Leaves are very shiny compared to the similar native white cedar .
Flowers are small and white 5 to 6 millimetres wide and are born in large sprays of 150 -250 flowers .
Fruits are smooth , yellow , oval or round in shape 1.5 to 2.5 centimetres long .
Habitat is often found along watercourses , but significantly invades dry rainforest communities and gardens . It is extremely hardy and fast growing .
Weed characteristics the very large size of this plant and its abundance results in this plant dominating and out competing native plants , especially riparian vegetation . Although planted for its insecticidal properties , this is rapidly becoming one of the worst woody weeds in coastal tropical areas . Fruit are toxic to humans but harmless to birds .
Dispersal is mostly by birds , and water is also significant .
BIOSECURITY MATTER
This species is not listed under Queensland Legislation however it is locally declared within the Whitsundays Regional Council area . Control is highly recommended .
HOW TO ACT
It is important to control mature trees to prevent seed spread . Cut stump or basal barking mature plants is recommended . Young plants can be hand pulled or foliar sprayed with a broad leaf selective herbicide . Ongoing monitoring and control of emergent seedlings is important for effective control .
