ndrew oliver, president of oliver & bonacini (o&b) restaurants met social
worker alana macdonald in may of 2011. The two were introduced by a mutual friend
at a bar in Toronto’s Rosedale neighbourhood and hit it off immediately. The pair were
engaged on October 25, 2013. Andrew orchestrated a romantic proposal on the eve of his birthday
at canoe restaurant with the help of his staff. After enjoying a late-night dinner near the stroke
of midnight, Andrew stepped away from the table while a manager whisked Alana to the
restaurant’s private dining room under the ruse of viewing a birthday gift the staff had for
Andrew. The private room was beautifully decorated with roses and candles, and Andrew was
there waiting to surprise Alana. “I got down on one knee and proposed. I asked Alana if she
would do me the honour of spending the rest of her life with me and give me my only birthday
wish,” recalls Andrew.
Andrew and Alana were married on October 18, 2014 at arcadian loft in downtown Toronto.
Natalie Ho of oliver & bonacini events and catering provided full-service planning for
the celebration. The couple worked closely with Natalie to produce a grand-scale event that
still felt intimate and party-like. “It was important to us that our celebration included an
incredible meal, really great music, and a gorgeous, candlelit setting. We wanted everyone, not
just us, to have the time of their lives,” says Alana. The couple chose the “Modern Victorian”
wedding invitation designed by Annah Syta for kleinfeld paper hudson's bay.
The couple relaxed and prepared for their big day at the trump international hotel &
tower toronto, where they also captured pre-wedding photographs at america restaurant
and the calvin bar. Alana accessorized her dress with diamond and pearl earrings, on loan
from her aunt for the occasion, and a silver hairpin that belonged to Andrew’s grandmother.
As a thoughtful and meaningful wedding day gift to Andrew, Alana sourced a pair of (hard to
find!) silver rooster cufflinks in honour of the Oliver family emblem. The rooster motif appears
frequently at the Oliver family home, and the symbolism is held dear to Andrew. Bridesmaids
wore black maxi dresses from kleinfeld hudson’s bay and colourful jewellery from kate
spade new york.
Todd Kjargaard of jackie o provided floral and decor for the event, including the bride’s
timeless bouquet composed of all-white roses. Pins that belonged to three of Alana’s grandmothers
were added to the bouquet as a sentimental touch. Bridesmaids’ bouquets were made with
roses in the vibrant hue Radiant Orchid.
