Little Sweet Things
We Call Dessert Bars
Text by Mariko Cantes
Choice, choices, and More Choices
Dessert bars contain a selection of sweets and
pastries – cupcakes, brownies, pastries, chocolate
and candies – that do more than give you and your
guests a sugar high.
“Usually, dessert choices of caterers are limited,”
says Joie Mendoza of Simply Cups N Cakes, an
online shop that specializes in specialty cupcakes
and cakes and also offers dessert bar packages.
“They only have about three on their menu. But with
dessert bars, they have a lot to choose from,” adds
Joie.
Your Wedding, Your Style
Aside from giving more variety, dessert bars also
become centerpiece especially colorful and themed
ones. Joie sees to it that the client’s preferences are
followed when it comes to the physical set-up and
personally does the layout for her crew to follow.
We then asked this 27-year old on what makes a
good dessert bar. According to Joie, Flexibility is
the key. “As a supplier, you have to be flexible. You
should be able to give what your client wants. That’s
why I took up courses because I want to give our
clients a lot of options.” Joie is a nursing graduate
who worked for a prestigious hospital for a few
years. She developed an interest in cake decorating
and later on studied baking, an influence from her
mother who is an avid baker. She is currently taking
up a culinary course at Metropolitan Enhancement
Academy of Southeast Asia to further hone
her skills and be able to address different client
preferences. For example, they have sugar-free
options for those who are diabetic.
