ENTERTAINMENT
When was the last time you went to a wedding and there was no surprise element? From mariachi bands to make your own perfume stations, weddings in 2026 have elevated the entertainment status, and couples are embracing experiential receptions like never before.
The latest trend? Murder mysteries. With TV shows like The Traitors and true crime documentaries becoming essential viewing, couples are choosing to bring the thrill of a whodunnit to their wedding days.
So how does it work, exactly?
“ How a murder mystery works can depend on who is supplying the experience,” explains Andrew Parker, owner of Kent-based Murders on Demand.
“ At Murders on Demand, it’ s a modern, immersive theatre style where interactions happen between characters as if they were happening for real.
“ Guests participate by reviewing evidence that is introduced during the show and combine it with information they gather from listening to the character to character interactions along with talking to the characters at their tables. This style of show,( which can be provided as known entertainment or as a surprise) also acts as a great ice breaker at tables as guests automatically start talking to each other as they try to solve the mystery.”
People are turning the day into a whole experience
Wedding days have changed a lot in even just the past five years. In a post-Covid world, and with the cost of everything on the rise, when couples plan a wedding, they’ re going big and investing in the things that really matter; bringing people together and making plenty of memories.
Couples are seeking entertainment that guests will be talking about for years to come, so something interactive like a murder mystery is perfect – it’ s something everyone, young and old can be involved in, and you’ re not at the mercy of the weather like you could be with interactive outdoor activities.
“ We’ ve seen an increase in interest for our murder mystery shows over the last year” says Andrew.“ I have been working weddings for many years as a DJ and host, and I’ ve seen how people have expanded on turning the day into a whole experience, moving away from the original, traditional ceremony and evening party.”
ANDREW’ S ADVICE
for booking a wedding murder mystery
If you are looking to book a show for your day, bear in mind the cast will probably need a side room from about 90 mins before they start to an hour after they finish.
Check with the company you are talking to about suitability of the show for guests, especially if you have children present.
A big one is checking that the company actually has the actors to provide your show. Some companies are known to take bookings for shows and worry about recruiting the actors for them much nearer the time. We know we are able to provide a cast for, but sadly some companies are not this professional and will put shows at risk of poor performance by hiring actors last minute with no knowledge of their acting abilities.
Check the style of the show. We are an immersive show, however there are also murder mystery plays and murder mystery interactive shows which have a Q & A session at the end, so always check how the show will be performed so you know what you’ re getting and what space will be needed.
