PLANNING

The Legal Bits

What are Banns?
Banns are notice of the proposed marriage and can be read in the parish church of each of the partners and in the church where it has been agreed the marriage can take place. They must be read on three Sundays before the ceremony takes place.
If you’ re not getting married in a Church of England church, then you’ ll need to give 28 days notice of the marriage to the register office.

How do I give notice?
Giving notice is when you both sign a legal statement at your local register office. This is to formally announce your plan to marry, and must be done at least 29 days before your ceremony( although it’ s recommended to do it three months ahead of the wedding date.) However your ceremony can take place within 12 months of giving notice.
You can’ t give notice unless you’ ve secured your wedding venue, so make sure this is booked before you give notice.
