Obligation, prohibition, advice and possibility 12-13 year-old students Sessions: a 55-minute lesson (part 1) Objectives Stated on ppt Procedure Warm-up 1. Students guess the answer to the question on slide 1. That will lead the teacher to introduce the topic of the unit – sports – and more specifically, the expressions used to describe sports rules. Controlled practice (Teacher-student interaction) 2. Slides 2-3-4 - The students will be given example sentences with the structure they will learn to express obligation, advice and possibility when describing sports rules, focusing at this stage on pronunciation and language accuracy. We will elicit from students the rule shown in each picture. 3. Slides 5 to slide 11 – After inserting the corresponding pics of Greedy Smurf, students will be told a story: Greedy Smurf is walking around the village when he sees the bakery. He walks into it, but Chef Smurf is not there. He sees a box of cakes and feels like eating all the cakes but he knows he shouldn’t. He doesn’t know what to do. An angel and a devil appear on his shoulders… We elicit from students the things they think the angel and the devil would tell Greedy Smurf. Slides 12 and 13 – Then , we show them possible answers containing the verbs they are going to practice using. We expect that at this stage some of them will have been able to come up with similar ideas and sentences. 4. Slides 14- 15 and 16 – The teacher explains the game instructions: students must stand in a big circle and start walking to their right when the music plays. When it stops, they must stop and those in front of the devil/ angel signs must give advice after reading the situation on the screen. Before starting we tell one student to read the first one as an example (slide 17) and elicit possible answers from them. We help them so that we get them to express obligation, prohibition, advice and possibility using MUST, MUSTN’T – CAN’T, SHOULD/SHOULDN’T and CAN. 5. We play the music and proceed as indicated. We monitor and encourage students to talk as much as possible since in their roles they must try to convince the person they are giving advice to.We might not use all the slides. When we see they have had enough practice and are able to use the verbs accurately, we tell students to go back to their seats. We can have a whole class discussion about school or class rules.
