Jacksons Law Firm residential property team leader Dan Nicholson tells Wear Business how he ’ s passionate about serving Wearside …
When you ’ re younger , you are always told to decide what you want to be when you grow up . For the first 27 years of my life , I had no idea knew what I wanted to be .
It was while I was studying media law as part of my journalism degree that I thought I quite liked the law and to my surprise , I was quite good at it – or so I like to think anyway !
It was hard to change career at 27 , completely dropping a career in marketing to start afresh in the challenging and competitive world of residential conveyancing . But I ’ ve never done anything the easy way and I enjoyed the challenge of throwing myself in at the deep end .
I started at Jacksons Law Firm in January 2020 , taking on my first fee-earning role , having cut my teeth in support roles at other firms for the previous couple of years , spending the majority of that time at a firm on the outskirts of Sunderland .
It was a challenge I was excited to undertake but then , after just eight weeks , the Covid pandemic hit , and we went into lockdown in the March of that year .
I was lucky enough not to be furloughed during the pandemic and I cannot thank Jacksons enough for that , as I learned so much during those months and I wouldn ’ t be the person I am , professionally , today if I hadn ’ t been thrown into that unreal situation .
Having shown my mettle during those long and often stressful months , I was promoted the following year to team leader and then , most recently , to Newcastle office manager , Jacksons once again showing their support for my career development .
So , what ’ s next on my radar ? Being a Sunderland lad , it ’ s always been an aim and a passion of mine to help grow the Jacksons business further into the Wearside market .
We do not see ourselves as being a “ Teesside ” or a “ Newcastle ” firm , but a “ North-East ” firm and Wearside is a key part of the region that we are here to serve
Sunderland is a city which is going places . There is an abundance of development happening and more planned and , with the opportunities that that creates , we are seeing numerous businesses taking up new space or expanding their existing space within the city .
I and my 96 colleagues at Jacksons are all here to help you . Whatever the nature of the issue , we will have someone here who is able to assist . Our aim is to bring expert advice and support to the Wearside region to help you achieve your goals .
As well as providing expert advice to the professional standards that you would expect of us , we like to think that we also understand the needs of our clients . Our offering is all about service - it ' s the little things that people want . For example , if you want to speak to me , you will get through to me , you won ’ t be passed around or put on hold for 20 minutes . We pride ourselves on our client experience and value quality over quantity .
If you want to know more about us then please get in touch or keep an eye out for us in the local business news as we continue to grow our support for the Wearside business community .
As for me and my future , it ' s firmly with Jackson ' s and Sunderland . I am currently undertaking the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations and will be admitted to the roll of solicitors in 2024 . While learning and qualifying on the shop floor has , without doubt , been a long road to where I want to be , I believe it ’ s been a route that has shaped me into a more grounded , pragmatic and empathetic adviser .
This year will be a hard year for me academically . However , with the continued support of Jacksons and my colleagues in the firm , it is a challenge I am relishing .
A wise man once said that nothing worth having was ever easy , but I can vouch for the fact that hard work pays off in the end .
