Collaboration key to multi-million pound programme

Six months on and a multi-million pound European Social Fund ( ESF ) project led by the University of Sunderland is proving to be a vital component in investing in one of the region ’ s greatest economic assets – its people .

Launched in September 2021 , the North East Workforce Skills Programme is an ESF funded project worth nearly £ 15m and is aimed at levelling up workforce skills to support over 17,500 employees across the Tyne and Wear and Northumberland area by September 2023 .
The North East Workforce Skills Programme supports employers to access the tools they need to upskill their workforce through the consortium ’ s wide-ranging offer .
Led by the University of Sunderland , the consortium of further and higher education providers in the North-East includes Access Training , MTC Training , Newcastle College Group , SETA , Code and TDR Training .

The first of two new office developments in Riverside Sunderland has secured its first occupier , ahead of the start of construction .
RSA Insurance ( RSA ), one of the UK ’ s largest general insurers , has signed a deal to relocate its customer services team to ‘ Faber ’, the first of two Legal & Generalbacked highly-sustainable offices that will be developed by Landid .
The insurer will take a lease on 38,000 sq ft of office space in the heart of the city centre , relocating from its current premises in Doxford International Business Park .

Employers can utilise the ESF funding to address CPD requirements within their business up to a maximum of € 200,000 over a three-year period if private sector , and with no limit if public sector .
Levy paying employers have provided the match funding to support the ESF contract , which ensures that the programme can be accessed by all employers .
RSA to move to new Riverside Sunderland office
in Sunderland , said : “ We are delighted to have signed the lease for our new office in Sunderland . We have been operating in the region for many years and are looking forward to continuing to have a presence here .”
Leading gaming company MERKUR Slots has opened a £ 200,000 entertainment centre in Sunderland – creating 10 new local jobs in the process .
The opening is part of a nationwide programme that will see MERKUR Slots invest over £ 10m on UK high streets in 2022 .
The new High Street venue features the latest bingo and digital slot machines , with the emphasis firmly on low stake gaming and pay-outs ranging from £ 5 to £ 500 , and an extensive library of new and classic games . Customers also receive unlimited free refreshments .
