Name : Nevil Tynemouth Born : South Shields Lives : Blyth
Organisation and job title : Founder director at New Results , based at West Rainton .
When I was at school , I wanted to be … a racing car driver . I have always been a car fan , and racing ( in any form ) is something I have always been passionate about . The thing that hurts when I look back is the fact I just didn ’ t realise that I could have made this dream happen .
The best career decision I ever made was … leaving BT to start New Results . It felt like a massive step , moving away from a steady corporate career to start my own business . I loved my corporate career and everything I did , but nothing beats the thrill and enjoyment of starting and running your own business .
The biggest change in my 20 years in Sunderland … the opportunities in Sunderland as a city . I spent 20 years living in Sunderland and my business is based here . We can see a physical change in the skyline , and this is being matched by a change in ambition and outlook .
Sunderland can bounce back from the impact of Covid-19 by … focusing on growth , engaging in all of the new plans for the city and being proud of our capabilities individually and collectively .
The best part of my job is … the variety of people and organisations I meet . I get a chance to train and develop global companies and major local organisations right through to local start up and growing businesses . Each one gives me a fascinating insight into people , cultures and companies .
The biggest downside of my working life is … having to step away from clients when the job is done . It ’ s happened a few times , especially with growing businesses . We help them take that next major step and then they might not need us for a few years . It ’ s hard to step away , but we have to do the best thing for our clients . It ’ s especially rewarding when they come back again for the next stage of their development .
If I could change one thing about my organisation ... can I ask for a time machine or a cloning device ?!
Four words to describe me are … professional , curious , fun , and unexpected .
My business mantra is … “ There is nothing in life you have to do .” I love to explore the choices you have , how you behave and consequences you get . This little phrase has helped me personally , professionally and helped so many people I work with take a new direction .
My greatest achievement is … starting the business at the height of the banking crisis and keeping it working . Yes , we have had to change and develop , but not many companies survive the first two years , let alone the first 12 years .
The biggest frustration I encounter in the Wear region is … people who want to look backwards and not forwards . I agree , let ’ s not lose sight of our deep and rich heritage , let ’ s keep that and look forward to great new opportunities in the region .
My favourite local charity is … there are so many great charities out there , but to name one it would have to be Grace House . The team there do a fabulous job in offering everything from respite care through to family activity days and counselling .
When I ’ m not working , I like to spend my time … walking , especially at the beach . You will find me walking most mornings , evenings and weekends . I love to cook as well , it really relaxes me ( especially with some great tunes playing and a glass of wine to hand ).
My guilty pleasures are … Motor Racing F1 , touring cars and car shows . I also like a new challenge and I am taking singing lessons , but don ’ t worry there aren ’ t any public performances , this is purely for my own enjoyment .
The best holiday I ever had was … driving Route 66 in a Ford Mustang convertible ( did I mention I loved cars and driving ). The scenery and history was stunning and it was such a treat to completely disconnect and soak up American hospitality at its best .
Not many people know this about me , but … I used to race a car with my wife Nic ( she was great , and I was ok ). When we got married , I arrived on the back of a white horse wearing a full suit of armour and we had all of guests dress up in medieval costumes for fun .
In retirement , I ’ ll spend my time … walking at the beach and discovering more about the wide world and our wonderful region .
