Ultimately the panels linked to migration reminded the audience that
there are global networks
of migration research and
policy studies, knowledgeable people, resources,
and technologies which
were not available before. These global networks can and should foster
international collaborative
efforts to find viable solutions to the complicated
and urgent problems surrounding migration today.
An important segment of
the Conference featured
the work of young investigators, whose section
inaugurated the opening
day of the Conference.
Presentations
featured
business startup accelerator insight from Austin
(Giacomo Ghilardo), DNA
molecular simulation (Lorenzo Boninsegna) and
chromatin folding model
(Michele Di Pierro) from
Rice University, genetics of
neurodegeneration from
Baylor College of Medicine (Alberto Di Ronza),
and simulation exploration (Alberto Falcone) and
climate change (Simone
Lolli) from NASA. Young
investigators also included five doctoral candidates (Mauro Montalbano,
Claudia Marino, Filippa Lo
Cascio, Emanuele Mocciaro e Salvo Saieva) and two
post-doctorals
(Alberto
Fucarino e Michela Marcatti) enrolled in the International Ph.D. Program
in Biomedicine and Neuroscience co-sponsored
by the University of Texas
Medical Branch (UTMB),
Galveston, TX, and the
University of Palermo. The
program has been created thanks to the indefatigable Luca Cicalese who
recently received a Ph.D.
Honoris Causa in Biomedicine and Neuroscience
from the University of Palermo.
The keynote speaker for
the Physics session was
Dr. Alberto Devoto, a distinguished academician
from the University of Cagliari who has extensive
experience in international research and collaborations thanks to his work
at the Italian Embassy in
Washington. He presented a fascinating lecture
titled “The DarkSide Collaboration and the Search
for Dark Matter” highlighting how Italy is at the
forefront of research for
