Learn more about the pony swim >>

Things I learned...

1. Bring camp chairs. Standing for long periods of time can make a fun adventure seem not so fun.

2. Take a small cooler with snacks and drinks.

3. Rain Gear! The event goes on rain or shine.

4. Bug Spray! The mosquitoes are pony size!

5. A good pair of muck boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you want to be up close to the action you will get dirty.

6. This is the most important: Thank the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and the Saltwater Cowboys!

They don't do this because of money, they do this to care for the ponies, their community and family tradition.

Friday Swim

On Friday, adult ponies swim back to Assateague Island to live another year in the wild.

Boys will be boys!

One of the foals sold for $20,000 and was then allowed to return to the wild

The auctions help maintain the herds
