Spencer West was born on January 9, 1981 in Memorial Hospital in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He was born with sacral agenesis, a rare genetic spinal disorder. Because of that disorder he was forced to get both of his legs amputated at the age of 5. Spencer and his friends were looking for a way to help people in Kenya in 2002 and his friend suggested to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and funds. Spencer climbed the tallest mountain in Africa, WITHOUT the use of his legs, only his arms and wheel chair, that’s crazy upper body strength. He himself has said that his arms aren’t meant to walk on so he required a lot of training. After his training he was able to bench press 125 pounds, that’s heavier than me. He also did cardio and one of his feats were, on his wheelchair being able to “run” 4km or 2.5m in just 20 minutes(12km/hr) just 7km from the pace of the current Boston Marathon record holder. He also wrote the best selling book called Standing Tall: My Journey. He was also the star of the documentary Redefine Possible: The Story of Spencer West. Spencer West is truly a very inspirational man in many ways.
