The We-Be Talking Tree
!
Welcome
to
the
We-‐Be
talking
tree.
I
am
Debbie
Devine
and
I
need
your
help.
I
am
a
marriage
and
family
therapist
who
specializes
in
helping
folks
heal
their
rela?onships
with
food
and
body
image.
I
also
help
with
all
the
typical
therapist
stuff.
Advice
is
some?mes
fine,
but
I
would
MUCH
rather
hear
what
you
are
curious
about.
If
you
would
be
willing
to
share
what
you
think
about
the
ar?cle
below,
ask
ques?ons,
share
a
reflec?on
of
your
own,
it
would
mean
the
world
to
us
and
possibly
to
another
person
who
is
shy
to
speak
up.
I
will
change
the
name
you
give
and
iden?fying
details
so
that
you
remain
anonymous.
See
the
listed
topics
at
the
end
of
this
ar?cle
and
tell
us
what
you
want
to
hear
about.
Please
write
to
me
at
[email protected].
There
are
no
dumb
ques?ons,
I
don’t
care
if
your
grammar
is
correct
and
we
will
always
be
kind
and
thoughOul
with
your
offerings.
Okay

Then!!!!
5
Ques?ons
to
Make
Your
Goals
Work
For
You!
If
I
say
the
United
States
of
_____________.
Mary
has
a
liXle
__________.
A
penny
saved
is
a
penny________.
I
bet
you
are
able
to
fill
in
the
blanks
preXy
easily.
In
fact
what
I
am
about
to
tell
you
is
a
lot
like
telling
fish
about
water.
It
is
so
THERE
you
may
not
even
see
it!
The
culture
we
live
in
is
surrounding
and
permea?ng
us
with
messages
all
the
?me.
So
my
guess
is
you
have
probably
goXen
some
preXy
clear
ideas
from
your
culture
about
who
you
are
supposed
to
be
to
fit
into
the
world
around
you.
There
is
only
one
problem,
you
have
been
given
too
many
mixed
messages
and
it
is
downright
unfair.
Some
of
the
biggest
westernized
ideals
we
learn
are
downright
shams
when
it
comes
to
life
sa?sfac?on.
Did
you
ever
get
the
message
that
that
to
be
happy
you
need
to
be
any
of
these
overgeneralized
typical
things?
(Circle
one
in
each
grouping)
fat/thin,
rich/poor
famous/outcast
If
you
circled
thin,
rich
and
famous
you
have
successfully
goXen
just
some
of
the
main
messages
your
culture
has
been
feeding
you
(and
your
parents
and
their
parents
before
them).
It
is
much
easier
to
sell
people
stuff
with
messages
like
this
but
I
digress.
Guess
what?
The
research
on
happiness
says
that
seeking
these
very
ideals
can
actually
lower
your
happiness
waaaaaay
down.
According
to
researchers
Tim
Kasser
and
Richard
Ryan,
the
things
that
actually
require
the
approval
of
others
offer
us
the
LEAST—yup
the
least
sa?sfac?on.
Yet
those
are
the H0
