Brianne ( Bre ) Rowh

Assistant Director of Fitness at the University of Maryland , Type 1 Diabetes , age of onset 7 years old
My father was type 1 diabetic , so when I started drinking a lot and had to go t o the bathroom a lot , they were already well aware of the symptoms . They took me to my primary physician who did a fasting blood glucose test and I was diagnosed that day . I spent 1-week in West Virginia University Hospital working to learn my new norm , and then was released . I then began doctoring at Johns Hopkins Pediatrics with a wonderful endocrinology team . I consider myself blessed because I was diagnosed at a young age . I have met many young adults that were diagnosed in their late teens / early 20 ’ s . I really don ’ t remember a life without diabetes so the adjustment period was less of a hurdle for me . At age 7 , I wasn ’ t yet making a lot of food-related decisions on my own so that helped in me learning to manage my disease from my parents .
That being said , I did go through a rebellious stage in which I really didn ’ t care to manage my disease ( aka college )…. I ’ m told that this is normal . I spent 4 years not maintaining great control of my blood sugar , binge drinking alcohol on occasion , and suffering from rapid glucose highs and lows as a result of little management . I was very lucky because post-college I had a few bad scares with very low , lows , but was able to bring my blood sugars back in control relatively quickly with minimal damage .
Physically when your blood sugar is not well controlled it drains your energy and makes you gain weight . Your body is constantly in overdrive either fighting a high or recovering from a low . It ’ s hard to explain , but it can set the tone for your day in terms of energy and internal motivation .
Mostly I do well emotionally , though sometimes dealing with this disease is just a pain in the butt ! Diabetes comes with a stigma and type 1 is very different than type 2 . Regardless ,
