FIRST STOP : DISNEY ’ S CONTEMPORARY RESORT Our journey begins at the Contemporary Resort , which opened along with the monorail on October 1 , 1971 . The best way to do this resort is stay in the tower — the main A-frame section . How futuristically cool is it to be able to wake up , roll over , and see the monorail whizzing by ? ( OK , you need to leave your room first , but still !)
If you want to splurge , a Theme Park View room is the icing on the Disney cake . For the 50th Anniversary , you ’ ll find me staying in the Garden Wing beside the main tower ! # bucketlist
The resort began a massive room makeover this past summer , and it ’ s incredible . Literally ! You ’ ll spot characters and décor inspired by Pixar ’ s The Incredibles throughout .
The feature pool is always a big draw for my kids , and this resort delivers with a 17-foot-high slide . Check for kids . And me ? I like the availability of a nearby whirlpool spa and cabana rentals . Check for mom .
Another check for the family is breakfast at Chef Mickey ’ s . We ’ ve been going here since our kids ’ first Magic Kingdom adventures . The chance to snap a photo with Mickey and Friends while fueling up for the day is a family tradition .
Dinner at California Grill is also a treat . Located on the 15th floor , this venue offers top-notch cuisine along with spectacular views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks . Hand-rolled sushi is a fan-favorite , but they also offer a mouthwatering Oak-fired Filet of Beef and nice salads , plus a selection of more than 300 wines .
California Grill has also cooked up a new experience to coordinate with the 50th anniversary celebration .
Disney Legend Mary Blair created the 90-foot mural located beside the monorail at the Contemporary .
