PETER FLIES INTO FLORIDA Just as it had in Disneyland , Peter Pan ’ s Flight served as an opening-day attraction at Magic Kingdom in 1971 , but it improved much of what was still missing from the California version at the time . Peter was present throughout the attraction , including a classic sword fight with Hook . Imagineers also had more room to fit in Mermaid Lagoon and its rainbow , as well as the true ending of the film : a golden ship soaring into the night .
Also noteworthy was the addition of new Audio-Animatronics , including the pirates and Lost Boys . WDW also managed to give guests one of the most beloved moments from the film : Captain Codfish Hook straddling the jaws of the Crocodile .
WAITING TO GROW UP , NOT WAITING IN LINE The biggest problem with Peter Pan ’ s Flight across four out of the five parks that house the ride is the slow queue . Unlike other Omnimover rides , Peter Pan ’ s Flight really does limit you to two adult riders per ride . The attraction reportedly has one of the lowest hourly load capacities across Disney Parks .
The queue at Magic Kingdom also kept guests outside , in the Florida heat , with nothing to do . That is , until
2016 , when Imagineers added an indoor ( and air-conditioned ) portion to the queue . This part of the queue includes beautiful Peter Pan artwork and an interactive version of the Darling ’ s nursery . Guests can watch Tink fly about , interact with shadows on the wall , and even play
“ Off to Neverland ” via the Play Disney Parks mobile app .
YOU CAN FLY : RIDE EXPERIENCE After snaking our way through Magic Kingdom ’ s interactive queue ( and maybe freezing off some of that sweat thanks to the air conditioning ), two at a time , we board a galleon ( fancy word for ship ) and fly through another model of the Darling ’ s nursery and out the window . Look down to see Nana by her dog house , guilting us with those puppy-dog eyes .
TIP : Don ’ t let Nana distract you ; you may also spot a hidden Mickey as you fly over .
Our ship continues to climb as the orchestral version of “ You Can Fly ” collides with the loud city noise of London . Here is the highest point of our flight — and perhaps the most breathtaking . This view also offers quite a few tricks from the Imagineers , but more on that later because , look , there ’ s Neverland in the distance .
