To animate this , Disney called upon senior software engineer , Kelly Ward , who had just earned her Ph . D . in — what else ?— animating human hair .
In an interview with Science Friday , Ward said of Rapunzel ’ s physics-defying hair , “ In reality , there might be a lot of friction on the ground that ’ s gonna pull the hair back and strain her motion … There was a lot of art direction to try and make it do what maybe it wouldn ’ t in the real world , but what we wanted it to do in our Tangled world .” Also , it ’ s magic , so there ’ s that .
That might help explain why Tangled holds the title of most expensive animated film ever . It cost $ 260 million to make .
RAPUNZEL EASTER EGGS Walt himself was working on Rapunzel ’ s story in the 1940s , but the idea was inevitably shelved in favor of the classics we know and love today . And Tangled holds a special distinction : It was the 50th animated motion picture to be produced by Walt Disney Studios .
For these reasons , and maybe just for fun , animators included many hidden references to previous Disney movies .
Hidden in Rapunzel ’ s tower are a few nods to previous princesses . The bottom banister of the stairway leading to her room bears an apple painting , representing Snow White . Further up the stairs , more banisters show a glass slipper ( Cinderella ), a rose ( Belle or Briar Rose ), and a shell ( Ariel ).
