BRINGING UP BABY So how do Animal Care teams support the upbringing of new arrivals from a distance ? During the early stages , they often rely on forms of enrichment to encourage the development of natural behaviors and growth . Tiger cubs rely on their mothers until 18 to 24 months or until they can hunt on their own . Enrichment through small toys , scents , and swimming pools encourages tiger cubs to explore and get exercise .
The Animal Care team will continue to facilitate vet check-ups and milestone moments as needed , such as introducing solid foods when developmentally appropriate .
Another popular animal guests are sure to spot both on Kilimanjaro Safaris and on the savanna at Disney ’ s Animal Kingdom Lodge is the giraffe . As with all of Walt Disney World ’ s animals , the Animal Care experts are well-versed in the unique needs of giraffe calves and ensure their particular environmental needs are well supported .
“ For the first four to five months of their lives , giraffe calves congregate in nursing groups called creches to rest and socialize while their mothers forage ,” a Disney Animal Care spokesperson explained . “ Giraffes are weaned around one year of age but may stay with their mothers even after . Given their size , baby giraffes are very fragile , so maintaining a neutral and comfortable space for them is very important , so they are never spooked or startled .”
