Last two years we visited WDW in the last week of August
and the crowds were very manageable. The summer tourist
crowds were gone and most of the schools were back in
session.

We like to get to the parks at opening to be able to catch
several rides before the crowds hit. We always have a back
of snacks to eat so that we avoid peak times in the
restaurants. If you want to watch fireworks consider
watching from New Fantasyland or even Frontierlan
