FROM LISTENING TO LIVING Those who ’ ve spent a lifetime visiting Disney may remember that this attraction opened in 1982 as one of the original EPCOT features . It was then known as Listen to the Land . Much as its current iteration does today , Listen to the Land invited riders to reflect on the history and future of agriculture as we know it , starting , aptly , in the heart of a seed .
Back then , a live Cast Member accompanied each ship on the cruise into cultivation , narrating as they went . These intrepid captains would explain how plants are “ natural factories ,” providing us with many of the important materials we need to survive , including not only food but also shelter .
Then as now , the boats would progress through a series of informative dioramas

Part dark ride and part outdoor greenhouse tour , with special heat , wind , and mist effects cleverly implemented to bring the journey to life , Listening with the Land was an example of cutting-edge technology for its era — and even four decades later , the experience stands the test of time .
