THE HABITAT Land usage is one of the main things that sets Animal Kingdom apart in its care for the animals . Instead of being kept in cages , most of the 300 + species represented at Animal Kingdom are given open-air habitats that mimic their natural environments .
Animal Kingdom comprises more than 500 acres total , which makes it the largest Disney theme park by a wide margin . Most of that landmass gives the animals an extensive area in which to roam . In fact , 110 acres is dedicated to Kilimanjaro Safaris alone , ensuring that the African animals have plenty of freedom to explore and run .

In the Disney + series , Magic of Disney ’ s Animal Kingdom , Executive Creative Designer Joe Rohde speaks fervidly about the importance of natural habitats . Due to a decline in animal population among several species in the wild , Rohde believes that the unique environment at Animal Kingdom is even more necessary today than it was when the park originally opened .
“ Conservation is intrinsic to Disney ’ s Animal Kingdom ,” Rohde says . “ Everything revolves around the idea that nature is of supreme value . It can ’ t be traded , and it can ’ t be replaced .”
