That first trip down Main Street, U.S.A. sent my senses into overdrive. The first thing I recall
is the sweet smells coming from the Confectionary. Cotton candy mixed with cookies and
cupcakes. Ahhhh… Over the sugary goodness I caught a whiff of the steam coming from
the train pulling into the station.
The rest of the day I went around sniffing the air like a bloodhound searching for a convict.
I loved that the different lands of Magic Kingdom have their own unique smells to them,
this total sensory experience can seduce you into feeling that you actually are a pirate of
the Caribbean, or perhaps on the riverbank of the mighty Mississippi, or even eating a
chilidog with Stitch. I couldn’t wait to see if the rest of the parks could hold my “sniffer”
attention as much as Magic Kingdom did.
Epcot was an explosion of olfactory satisfaction! My family raced to Soarin’ to experience
what we had read was one of the most popular attractions. Soarin’ lived up to the hype,
and now the smell of oranges will forever transport me back to Epcot. After Soarin’, we
headed over to the World Showcase. I remember standing in Mexico and stopping to smell
the air. Fajitas and a hint of lime! Outstanding! Each country we visited set off an entirely
new set of smells to experience–from the rich caramel in Germany to the spicy aromas in
Morocco, the World Showcase did not disappoint!
By day three my sniffing game was on point. I wondered what Hollywood Studios would
have to offer; at this juncture I thought I was going a little batty as by now I was getting
some strange looks from passersby when I would sniff the air and sigh contentedly. We
made our way to the Tower of Terror and once inside, the attraction actually smelled musty
and I was left with the feeling that I had indeed entered a spooky, vintage hotel.
