Considering 2025 as one of the craziest years he’ s ever been a part of, Mineral Wells Head Coach Cody Worrell praised his program for their ability to overcome adversity given the circumstances.
“ Just when you think you’ ve got something figured out, an injury occurs,” said Worrell.
It didn’ t take long for the Rams to react on the fly as the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart went down after the first week of the season. Already without starting wide receiver, Barron Burkhall, Mineral Wells scratched and clawed its way through the rest of non-district and much of District 3-4A with Javon Johnson under center.
Comfortable playing the position with years of experience in lower levels, Johnson said stepping into a starting role was stressful at times, but never nerve-racking, despite not many reps during the preseason.
“ I thought I stepped up and did pretty well,” said Johnson.

The abrupt spotlight made Johnson mature quickly, Worrell noted. As much as he finds the saying cliché, Mineral Wells’ head coach thought“ next man up” embodied the season.
“ You hear it in the NFL and college all the time. High school is different because‘ next man up’ is for the birds,” he joked.
The Rams’ injuries caught up to them with only one win over the course of a month and a half.
