MONITOR FELLOWSHIP T he Membership Committee (MC) under the chairmanship of the Senior Warden (as the Master then was) had an active year in 2013. After four meetings of the Committee in full session and two subgroup meetings it has produced a policy paper on criteria for the recruitment of future members and how to encourage engagement of current members. This has now been adopted by the Court of Assistants and is being implemented. Recruitment The principal recommendations of the paper are: 1.Age profileAt least 50% of all new Freemen should be under the age of 50 when elected; 2.Recruitment of people from newer IT industriesThe Company would like to recruit more members from the emergent new IT sectors such as “cloud computing” and social media sectors based round new technology hubs such as Tech City and more representatives from the TV, broadcasting, music and film industries; WCIT Membership Recruitment and Engagement The 2020 Vision The Role of the WCIT Membership Committee 3.Senior members of the industryIn addition the Company, through its membership, should have representatives from all of the major players in the IT industry including Google, Oracle, Microsoft, Apple, ARM, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook. A greater number of CIOs/ CTOs from major corporates, City institutions and professional firms would also raise the profile of the Company. We are seeking new members who are people who have made a significant contribution to IT, its use in business, industry, the professions, or who are eminent in IT education. Our aim is to continue to be well represented by a cross-section of high achievers in the IT sector. With these sectors in mind, we should be prepared to identify potential senior members and approach them directly, this policy being orchestrated by the MC; 4.Encouragement of corporate involvement with the CompanyWe should continue with the policy of recruiting individuals not corporate members. Whilst we do not have corporate membership we welcome senior people from major corporates to become members and to take advantage of the opportunity of corporate sponsorship. 5.Journeyman SchemeIt is recognised that not all potential members who are at an early stage working in IT or with IT companies may feel ready to become Freemen or Liverymen. For these, increasingly, there is the choice of becoming Journeymen; frequently a stepping-stone to full membership status. The Journeyman Scheme is designed for younger members who normally will have had five years’ experience as qualified IT practitioners and are willing to work with a mentor for a three year period. We are already receiving a good level of enquiries from potential candidates in categories 1 and 2, but would welcome senior people in categories 3 and 4 whom we might approach with a view to membership. Whilst most membership applications should be referred to Mandi Moore, the Assistant Page 6
