The insurance industry has been talking about a “hard market”
for years, and it is starting to feel like changes are coming. In
Canada, we have been in a soft market for quite a long time.
Insurance has been relatively easy to obtain; insurers compete
with each other for preferred business, and rate increases have
been somewhat stable. A hard market is a difficult place to be—
insurance companies have less capacity to take on new business
and many are looking to make changes to existing accounts. You
may see rates increasing, coverage limits changing, or insurance
companies declining to write industries no longer to their
appetite. If you find yourself facing insurance challenges, here
are some steps you can take:
• Make sure you have a strong relationship with your
insurance broker. Your broker is your advocate, and will
work to place your coverage through their knowledge of
the marketplace and the relationships they have built with
insurers.
• Act quickly. Connect with your broker well in advance
of your renewal and provide your updated information.
Looking to change brokers? Don’t wait until the last minute.
More time allows your broker to source the market.
• Don’t take it personally. If an insurer no longer wants to
write your business, it probably doesn’t have anything to do
with your specific operations.
• Manage your risk. Work with your broker to make sure
you are doing everything you can to prevent a loss before it
happens.
