HOME Spooky, and Special WRITTEN BY CAROL BOTT JARGER The Herz house in Pompton Lakes is filled with history and a few spirits PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS MARKSBURY E rika and Bill Herz have enjoyed the views from their Pompton Lakes home for 49 years. This historical landmark, known as The Outlook, dates back to 1890 when it was built by Christine Terhune Herrick (Albert Payson Terhune’s sister). While living there, Herrick wrote many books on domestic topics ranging from childcare to cooking and budgeting. The Outlook, which was designated a historical landmark by the Pompton Lakes Historical Commission in 2006, is situated across from Sunnybank (known now as Terhune Memorial Park) in Wayne. Sunnybank is where noted author and collie breeder Albert Payson Terhune lived for most of his life. He wrote 30 dog-focused books retelling adventures of his rough collies that he bred and raised in Sunnybank Kennels. The dog Lad, from Terhune’s best seller novel, Lad: A Dog, and all of his Sunnybank collies were laid to rest there at Champion Rock and other favorite spots on the estate.
