E D I TO R’S NOTE
H
istory tends to repeat
itself, and the pages
of this issue of
Wayne Magazine
are no exception.
We’re highlighting
a few current stories whose roots
harken back to a distant past.
Our home feature, “Spooky and
Special,” showcases the Pompton
Lakes home of Erika and Bill Herz.
Known as The Outlook, it was
originally built by Christine Terhune
Herrick (Albert Payson Terhune’s
sister) in 1890. You’ll learn about
its connection
to Sunnybank
(now Terhune
Memorial
Park) in
Wayne, and
understand
better how
the Herz family is keeping
history alive
at their house.
Our First Person feature,
“Mr. Little League,” profiles John
“Chick” Choka, who was president of
Wayne’s Little League for almost 50
years, and was the league’s director
when the team won the 1970 Little
League World Series Championship.
He’s still active with the Wayne PAL
today.
Learn how a few high school
fencing coaches are training current
students in a sport that can be traced
back to the 15th century in “En
Garde, Courageous Competitors!”
These brave and talented students
are winning competitions and making
their coaches proud.
Finally, don’t miss the elegant
gowns of our prom fashions feature.
These couture looks resemble the
class and sophistication of the
Golden Age of Hollywood. ■
