PEDIATRIC
REHABILITATION
HELPS CHILDREN REACH
THEIR FULL POTENTIAL
Chilton MediCal Center
Every child deserves the opportunity to shine.
That’s what Chilton Medical Center’s Pediatric
Rehabilitation Program is all about: helping kids
achieve their full potential through physical,
occupational and speech therapy.
This comprehensive program is designed for
children who are challenged by developmental
problems, whether they’re associated with illness,
injury or other conditions. Conveniently located
at the Wayne YMCA, Chilton’s Pediatric
Rehabilitation Program provides individualized
evaluations by a team of health professionals,
including licensed physical therapists, occupational
therapists and speech language pathologists in a
child-friendly environment.
In lieu of frightening equipment, the staff uses
toys, electronics, play therapy and even aquatics to
engage children in meaningful, age-appropriate
activities. Physical therapy may include such
treatment as gait training, neuromuscular reeducation and balance training, while occupational therapy is aimed at improving motor development, strength, coordination and skills for
daily living. Additionally, speech therapy, also
available at Chilton Medical Center, helps children
with communication, swallowing problems, memory and/or other speech or language difficulties.
Of particular distinction, Chilton’s Pediatric
Rehabilitation Program offers specialized rehabilitation services for kids with autism. Chilton therapists
are trained in sensory integration and other techniques that are especially beneficial for children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. That
expertise allows staff to assess and build upon each
child’s strengths, while helping families learn how to
modify his or her environment so the child can function better at home, at school and in other settings. ❖
Chilton’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program is
located at the Wayne YMCA, One Pike Drive, Wayne.
Services are provided Monday through Friday, with
daytime and evening hours available. To schedule
an appointment, call 973-831-0717, ext. 2.
Ask the Doctor
According to Dr. Phillip Devadan of the Pediatric emergency
Department at chilton Medical center, one of the most important things you can do as a parent is to be prepared and have
a plan in the event of an emergency. An important fact to
know is where your nearest emergency department is located
for major medical events. A few examples of reasons to visit
the emergency room include:
■ Suspected broken bones
■ Uncontrolled bleeding
■ Severe flu symptoms
■ Severe cuts
■ Falls that result in a
loss of consciousness
■ Uncontrolled fever
■ Sports injuries
For those minor injuries and accidents, Dr. Devadan suggests having a
well-stocked first aid kit. It should include a variety of bandages, gauze pads,
adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, an antiseptic such as betadine or hydrogen
peroxide, a warm blanket, an ice pack and a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Dr. Devadan recommends insect sting treatments and
triangular bandages that can be used as a sling.
He also encourages all parents to have some basic CPR and first aid
training, but more importantly, safety precautions should be taken to childproof
your home. Preventing the injuries from happening in the first place is always
better.
