THE BUZZ WRITTEN BY CAROL BOTT JARGER GIRL CHALK, INC. GLAZE ARTISAN DONUTS CAROL BENNETT AND LINDA KEENAN-CUCCURULLO IT AINT JUST PAINT Linda Keenan-Cuccurullo and Carol Bennett, sisters and Wayne residents, started GIRL CHALK, INC. (200 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pequannock, 973-930-2114, girlchalk.com) to fuel their love of changing well-made vintage furniture and home décor items into more modern pieces. It’s a hometown shop that sells hand-painted upcycled furniture or the supplies to do it yourself. They sell sealers, creative products, and brushes. According to Linda, Fusion Mineral paints well on wood, glass, and metal. A specific line of paint is recommended for children and nursery equipment. “We do light upholstery and furniture repair, redo kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and do other custom painting in private homes,” adds Carol. They have a basement filled with furniture to help people find pieces for their homes. “We’re furniture finders and matchmakers,” says Linda. There are barn doors, vintage mirrors, and toy boxes. Girl Chalk artists will build custom benches for fire pits, and make foot and headboards for beds. Do-it-yourselfers can attend their classes to learn the ins and outs of painting, waxing, techniques, and stenciling. DANCIN’ DOWN THE STREET RHINO STUDIO 237 12 WAYNE MAGAZINE Jule Hazou, owner of GLAZE ARTISAN DONUTS (1055 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne, 973-832-7742, glazeartisan.com), “When you start with quality ingredients, you end up with quality.” Glaze Artisan Donuts is a full bakery that crafts and bakes traditional and eccentric donuts multiple times daily to insure freshness. Classic or infused, full-size and mini artisan donuts challenge the imagination. Hazou flavors the dough as well as the icing. There’s buttermilk strawberry, red velvet, and mint chocolate. Glaze’s Italian rainbow cookie donut got them national attention when Hazou appeared on the Good Morning America TV show. His cannoli donut is the No. 1 specialty donut, and the plain glazed donut is still their best seller. His maple bacon donuts became very popular, so he made maple bacon ice cream, too. Rhino Theatre in Pompton Lakes just got bigger with its new second location down the street at RHINO STUDIO 237 (237 Wanaque Ave., Pompton Lakes, 973-248-9491, rhinotheatre.com) that’s available to rent. Carmela Wolosz partnered with JoAnn Ventor for a combination of theater and dance in a different type of space just a short walk from the mainstage. Wolosz says, “The smaller stage and smaller theater have the ability to make those comedy shows and dramas really intimate because audiences are close up and feel part of the performance.” Everything on one floor makes it accessible to all. Rhino Theatre still has a full schedule. Check the website to see all that makes Rhino the area's theater destination, and to get ticket information for their holiday performances of Disney’s full-length version of “Beauty and the Beast.” ■ HOLIDAY 2016 CHALK GIRLS: ANNE-MARIE CARUSO; RHINO STUDIO 237: COURTESY OF RHINO THEATRE; DONUT: NITEENRKX/GETTY IMAGES/ISTOCKPHOTO TIME TO MAKE DONUTS
