Where’ snothing inthe world like being told that you have cancer,” he asserted.“ I’ ll never forget the day – November 6, 2014, two months shy of my 45th birthday. Iwas sitting in my office when Igot the news, and couldn’ t believe it. Iwas overwhelmed.”

It was that sense of shock and uncertainty following his own diagnosis and throughout his cancerjourneythat inspired March Associates’ gift to Chilton, which is aimed at easing the emotional burden of cancer. The donation enabled Chilton’ s Cancer Center to hire anurse navigator, an oncology specialist who guides patients and their families through the cancer experience.“ Iserve as an advocate, educator and champion for cancer patients, offering personalized supportfrom the point of diagnosis through treatment, recovery and beyond,” explained Lori Manning, RN, BSN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Coordinator / Patient Navigator, Chilton Cancer Center.
Among her many responsibilities, the nurse navigator helps newly diagnosed patients understand their illness and treatments while empowering them to make informed health care decisions. Importantly, she also provides agateway to health services – coordinating tests and medical appointments, assisting with insurance issues and potential barriers to care( such as transportation), connecting individuals to hospital and community resources, and enhancing communication between patients and their health care team.
