The feat would be impressive for anyone, but it is even more noteworthy considering Salerno’s tender age: He is 6 years old. (An Olympic sport again in 2020, BMX features riders on small-framed bikes racing primarily on lumpy and banked dirt tracks that resemble motocross courses.) Salerno knows there is a long road ahead for him, but he has plenty of time. He is currently accumulating points in state, regional and national amateur compe- titions, bringing him close to the highest skill classification, the expert skill level. Regardless of how he finishes, his mother, Carey Salerno, says she is super proud of him. “Ten years from now or so, when I’m 16, I’d like to turn pro,” he says. Clifton and Wayne A VALUABLE LESSON When TARAS PETRYSHYN came to America in 1997, the Ukrainian immigrant had a plan to “get a job, pay for college, see what happens next,” he told the CBS news affiliate in New York. And he did just that, graduating from Clifton High School three years later and returning to the school to work as a janitor during the night shift. In the daytime, he took classes at William Paterson University in Wayne. After graduation, he taught in the Clifton School District for 11 years. And this September, he began his first academic year as an assistant principal in Clifton’s School 14. He credits hard work in helping him achieve the American dream. A month into his new role, he says, “I love my job. It’s the other side of teaching, and it’s a good fit for me.” 8 FALL 2019 WAYNE MAGAZINE After more than 30 years as a go-to place for North Jersey fans of wine, cheese and charcuterie, GARY’S WINE & MARKETPLACE has added a West Coast store to its Bernardsville, Closter, Madison and Wayne, N.J. locations.
